Description

Codes that indicate an episode of acute appendicitis

Methodology

These codes were mapped first in snomed using the opencodelist builder. The search terms used were:

  • appendicitis
  • appendix
  • appendicectomy

The codes were discussed by 3 practicing doctors. A summary of this discussion is available on the github issue below. The main points were:

  • codes indicating chronic or recurrent appendicitis were removed
  • codes indicating a specific cause of appendicitis such as in relation to Crohns disease or amoebic were removed
  • codes indicating length of appendix as a specimen after surgery were kept.

These codes were mapped to CTV3 and rechecked. Some extinct codes were found during this mapping and removed.

The final codelist was signed off by the 3 clinicians indicated below.
