About
Description
This codelist aims to indicate if an individual was born in one of the UK countries (England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland) or the Crown Dependencies (Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey). This codelist will be used in conjunction with other migration codelists in order to create a migration status variable in a short data report describing the quality of migration recording in primary care data within the OpenSAFELY platform.
Methodology
Search strategy:
The following search terms were used: "Born in England", "Born in Wales", "Born in Scotland", "Born in Northern Ireland", "Born in the Isle of Man", "Born in Jersey", "Born in Guernsey", "United Kingdom"
Inclusion criteria for codes:
- Only codes including the word "born" were included.
- Whilst the Crown Dependencies are not considered part of the UK, their residents are eligible for full British citizenship and so have all the same legal entitlements when in England as UK residents. Therefore, whilst there will be differences in experience, for the purposes of this study, being born in a Crown Dependency was considered close enough to being born in the UK.
