Inclusion/exclusion criteria Included:
Azelastine (VTM) (SNOMED CT ID: 774720002). Azelastine 0.05% eye drops (VMP). We exclude nasal sprays : Azelastine 140 micrograms/dose nasal spray (VMP). Azelastine 210 micrograms/dose nasal spray (VMP). Fluticasone + Azelastine (VTM) 1193563001 Fluticasone propionate 50micrograms/dose / Azelastine 137micrograms/dose nasal spray (VMP) 21994411000001108
Borderline cases The following combination product was considered but excluded: Fluticasone + Azelastine (VTM). Fluticasone propionate 50 micrograms/dose / Azelastine 137 micrograms/dose nasal spray (VMP). These products were excluded because they are fixed-dose combination therapies containing an intranasal corticosteroid. The codelist was intended to capture azelastine monotherapy only, avoiding inclusion of combination products that represent a different treatment strategy and could reduce specificity for the intended intervention.
Sensitivity vs specificity
The codelist was designed to be specific, capturing azelastine monotherapy prescribed for Pharmacy First management of allergic rhinitis and allergic conjunctivitis while excluding combination products containing additional active ingredients.
Additional information The codelist includes both ophthalmic (eye drops) and intranasal spray formulations of azelastine because both routes are relevant to conditions managed through PF context. Fixed-dose combination products with corticosteroids were intentionally excluded to maintain a homogeneous codelist of azelastine monotherapy.
