Context

Pharmacy First

This codelist is intended for use in Pharmacy First analyses to capture prescribing of econazole-containing antifungal preparations used in the management of vulvovaginal candidiasis (uti control).

Inclusion/exclusion criteria

We included econazole-containing products identified through the virtual therapeutic moiety (VTM) and all corresponding medicinal products (VMPs). This includes econazole 1% cream, vaginal cream, pessaries, and combination pessary–cream preparations. These formulations are included as they represent topical antifungal treatments used in vaginal fungal infections in primary care.

We also included combination packs where econazole 150mg pessaries are supplied with econazole 1% cream or vaginal cream, as these reflect treatment regimens for vulvovaginal candidiasis.

We excluded eye drops formulations and econazole combination products containing hydrocortisone (econazole 1% / hydrocortisone 1% cream) to ensure the codelist captures antifungal monotherapy only and avoids inclusion of steroid–antifungal combination preparations, which may represent different clinical indications and severity profiles.

Borderline cases

Combination econazole products (e.g. pessaries with cream or vaginal cream) were considered borderline but were included because they represent standard combined regimens used in vulvovaginal candidiasis treatment. These were retained to ensure complete capture of prescribing episodes where both systemic-like (pessary) and topical therapy are supplied together.

Sensitivity vs specificity

This codelist is sensitive, aiming to capture all prescribing of econazole across available formulations, including monotherapy and standard combination pessary–cream regimens used in routine care. The inclusion of multiple formulations ensures comprehensive capture of antifungal prescribing within GP/Pharmacy First pathways.

Additional information

The codelist is structured using the dm+d hierarchy (VTM → VMP) to ensure completeness and consistency across prescribing data.
