Inclusion/exclusion criteria

Both Fucidin 20mg/g cream and Fucidin 2% cream and gel are included. We excluded Fusidic acid 250mg/5ml oral suspension (VMP), Fucidin 250mg/5ml oral suspension (LEO Pharma) (AMP), Fusidic acid 250mg/5ml oral suspen , Fusidic acid 1% modified-release eye drops (VMP), Fucithalmic 1% eye drops (Advanz Pharma) (AMP), Fucithalmic 1% eye drops

Borderline cases

All oral and ophthalmic fusidic acid formulations were excluded because they do not represent topical skin treatment use within Pharmacy First pathways. Oral suspension was excluded due to its systemic use profile and limited relevance in routine UK primary care prescribing compared with topical preparations.

Sensitivity vs specificity

The codelist prioritises specificity for topical antibiotic prescribing in community settings, focusing on skin and soft tissue infection management in Pharmacy First, while excluding systemic (oral) and ophthalmic preparations to avoid capturing non-relevant treatment pathways.

Additional information

Topical fusidic acid formulations (cream and gel) are widely used in primary care for impetigo and localised bacterial skin infections. Inclusion was restricted to dermatological preparations to ensure alignment with Pharmacy First clinical presentation pathways.
