About

Description

Hydrogen peroxide

Methodology

Context This codelist was developed to identify prescriptions for topical hydrogen peroxide 1% cream (Crystacide) in primary care prescribing data as part of the Pharmacy First evaluation. It is intended to identify prescribing of topical antiseptic treatment for superficial skin infections and wound management. Although developed for this study, it may be suitable for other studies requiring identification of this specific product.

Inclusion/exclusion criteria

Included:

The dm+d Virtual Medicinal Product (VMP) Hydrogen peroxide 1% cream. All associated Actual Medicinal Products (AMPs), including Crystacide 1% cream (Reig Jofre UK Ltd).

Excluded:

Other hydrogen peroxide formulations (e.g. oral solutions, mouthwashes, topical solutions). Combination products containing hydrogen peroxide with other active ingredients. Carbamide peroxide and other peroxide-containing products. Non-prescription antiseptic products not represented in the dm+d prescribing database. Borderline cases

The following products were considered but excluded:

Hydrogen peroxide oral or topical solutions: excluded because the study specifically focuses on the 1% cream formulation used within the Pharmacy First clinical pathway. Carbamide peroxide preparations: excluded because carbamide peroxide is a different active substance with different licensed indications. Combination antiseptic creams: excluded to ensure the codelist identifies only single-ingredient hydrogen peroxide cream. Sensitivity vs specificity

This codelist prioritizes specificity over sensitivity. It is designed to identify prescriptions for hydrogen peroxide 1% cream (Crystacide) only, thereby minimizing misclassification and excluding other hydrogen peroxide-containing products that are not relevant to the Pharmacy First evaluation.

Additional information

This codelist currently contains a single VMP and its associated AMP(s) within the dm+d dictionary. It should be reviewed periodically as dm+d is updated and additional manufacturers or equivalent products become available. Users should confirm that the codelist remains appropriate for their research question before reuse, particularly if the Pharmacy First formulary or prescribing practices change.

Codelists are developed by a broad community of users for individual study purposes, which may or may not meet the needs of other studies. They should not be thought of as universal definitions of a particular condition.

We don't offer any guarantees about what they do or don't identify. Users should carefully check that any codelist meets their needs, and seek clinical input where appropriate.

* dm+d codelists can be downloaded with codes mapped to changed VMPs included - this is the default for an OpenSAFELY project. See the documentation on keeping codelists up to date for more details.

* Note that this is the full list of explicitly included dm+d codes for this codelist. An OpenSAFELY project will by default also include previous or subsequent codes for any included VMPs that may have changed code. See the documentation on keeping codelists up to date for more details.

This page shows the search terms that were used to build the codelist. Concepts that match the search terms, but which were excluded, are in faint grey.
