Methodology Context Pharmacy First
Inclusion/exclusion criteria
Included ophthalmic (eye drop) formulations only that are used within the General practice pathway for allergic conjunctivitis. Oral tablets, capsules, inhalers and other non-ophthalmic formulations were excluded.
Borderline cases
Oral formulations (including tablets and capsules) and other non-eye-drop formulations were excluded, even where they contain the same active ingredient as an included ophthalmic preparation.
Sensitivity vs specificity
The codelist was designed to be specific, aiming to capture prescribing of ophthalmic treatments relevant to Pharmacy First context ( controls) while minimizing inclusion of medications prescribed for other indications or via non-ophthalmic routes.
Additional information The codelist includes only eye drop preparations intended for ophthalmic use. Restricting the list to this formulation aims to improve specificity for GP consultations involving eye conditions and reduces misclassification from systemic formulations of the same medications.Other formulations are for Food allergy (in conjunction with dietary restriction):https://bnf.nice.org.uk/drugs/sodium-cromoglicate/#medicinal-forms
