Inclusion/exclusion criteria
We included oral tablet formulations of valaciclovir relevant to routine community prescribing, including: Valaciclovir 100mg/5ml oral suspension, Valaciclovir 1g tablets (VMP), Valaciclovir 200mg/5ml oral suspension (VMP) ,Valaciclovir 250mg tablets (VMP) , Valaciclovir 250mg/5ml oral suspension (VMP) , Valaciclovir 25mg/1ml oral suspension (VMP), and Valaciclovir 500mg tablets (VMP) The codelist was restricted to oral formulations commonly used in primary care and Pharmacy First pathways, in line with the BNF valaciclovir medicinal forms guidance (https://bnf.nice.org.uk/drugs/valaciclovir/medicinal-forms/ )
Borderline cases
Liquid and oral suspension formulations were considered borderline because they may occasionally be prescribed for patients with swallowing difficulties or special clinical requirements.
Sensitivity vs specificity
The codelist was designed to prioritise specificity over sensitivity. The focus was on capturing standard oral tablet prescribing most representative of routine Pharmacy First antiviral management while including less commonly used formulations that could introduce both prescribing heterogeneity and completeness.
Additional information
The codelist focuses on oral formulations most likely to reflect community antiviral prescribing activity within the scope of Pharmacy First.
